When a child needs or has just had a tracheostomy(trach), parents have a lot of questions and worries. Our newest video program, The New Normal: Your Child’s Trach and You, helps parents care for their child’s trach and gives them confidence as they return home with their child. It also helps staff learn how to address concerns and seek teach-back on critical CPR skills. The 48-minute video covers:
• Introduction to trachs and terms (5 minutes)
• Basic trach cares (11 minutes), such as:
o Suctioning
o Cleaning the stoma site.
o Changing trach ties
o Changing the trach tube
• Common trach-related equipment and care (9 minutes)
• Problems and emergencies (7 minutes)
• Performing CPR on an infant or child with a trach (7 minutes)
• Guidance for living with a trach, both at home at home and travelling (9 minutes)
The video includes tips and impressions from a half dozen families whose children have trachs.
